The townships of Leeman and Greenhead are a comfortable three hours drive north of Perth via the Brand Highway. They experience some of the strongest summer winds that windsurfers will encounter in Western Australia, and as a result are great sailing sites.
Leeman townsite is situated adjacent to the small offshore island of 'Snag Island' which gave the town its original name. In 1972 the name was officially changed to Leeman in honour of Abraham Leeman van Santwits. Leeman was the navigator of the Waekede Boey which was sent to rescue the survivors of the Verguide Draeck (Gilt Dragon). No doubt the strong winds contributed to Leeman's ship being wrecked and him being marooned in 1656. Eventually he left the area in an open life boat and made it all the way to Indonesia and safety.
