In Perth the summer sea breeze - locally known as the Fremantle Doctor - increases to 15+ knots by 2 pm six out of seven days. By sunset, the Doctor may reach over 25 knots if the inland temperature has been high. Leighton Beach -just North of Fremantle - offers good slalom sailing and bump and jump conditions close to Perth. It is a very popular place to sail, especially on weekends. The Swan River is close enough to the coast to benefit from the strong sea breezes which make it ideal for slalom sailing or for learning to windsurf in the morning before the wind has strengthened.
There are many other sites worth exploring in Perth, including Woodman's Point for speedsailing, Dutch Inn for wave sailing when the swell is in and Scarborough Beach - the site of the 1994 PBA Championship, and Sorrento - which offers great wavesailing on the outer reef. Be warned, this spot is for experienced sailors only with very reliable equipment - its a long swim to the beach!
